Hedeath eaterthey were the stuff of nightmares for those of us who grew up with themharry potter-and even those who have probably never heard of them. They were supporters ofdark lord voldemort, who believed that pure, magical blood should rule all, and spoke loudly while supporting Voldemort, even going so far as to torture, blackmail, and murder those who disagreed.

It's hard to imagine why the Death Eaters would want to unite though - they had to follow some pretty strict rules from Voldemort, who was almost as hard on them as everyone else.
10. Get a dark mark tattoo
The first crazy rule the Death Eaters had to follow was to get a tattoo on their forearm. A tattoo is a lifetime commitment, but this one was, uh, unlike any other. It's a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth and it's pretty big.Did Death Eaters only wear long sleeves?? What did you do in the summer? Sometimes it's hot in the UK, I promise!
Only Voldemort's inner circle had to get this tattoo, and it strangely seems to be treated as an honor, but to be honest I don't think I would have been interested.

9. Answer his call when he burns
As if the tattoo itself wasn't enough, it burned when Voldemort wanted them to come to him, and apparently it hurt. This burn was literal. So you could be with family or in the middle of a work meeting and you just have to show up. This could end up being pretty hard to cover up, random urgent calls. Being a Death Eater was very illegal, so I wonder what excuses they sometimes had to cover up the fact that when Lord Voldemort called, they had to leave immediately.
It's safe to say that he wasn't a particularly considerate boss.
8. Never ask questions.
Death Eaters were never allowed to ask questions. Every interaction we had with Lord Voldemort was either a murmur of agreement or a response to his questions - there was never a moment where they could ask anything, and there was a clear feeling that they would have been punished if they had.
Seems a bit unfair considering what he asked of them, butthat's voldemort everywhere. It just seems strange that such powerful wizards would agree to do this for a man they don't know at all. After all, they didn't know him at all.
7. Letting others down
They should all be abandoned for this cause. Even if their families were involved and supported, Voldemort and ultimately blood supremacy had to come first. In return, they should leave behind everything that must have been particularly difficult for families with children:We saw Lucius Malfoyhe wrestled with him, evil as he clearly was. Somewhere inside he had a soul.
The Death Eaters must have truly believed in this cause to be willing to give their all for it. Voldemort must have been really charming at some point... you know, before the whole red-eyed, no-nose thing.
6. Don't dilute your blood
Of course, being a member of the pureblood cause meant they couldn't dilute that blood. TOPurebloods couldn't marry "down.", meaning they couldn't marry anyone who wasn't a pureblood.
Do you want to know why this is so weird? When were the Death Eaters formed?only twenty-eight pureblood families remained. That doesn't leave much room for decision making, so things got a little dicey on that front. But Voldemort was pretty strict about keeping as many purebloods in the world as possible, so I guess there is. You just have to choose between those that remain.

5. But follow a half-breed for a pure-blood cause.
The funny thing about all this is thatVoldemort was sad. They followed a half-breed for the cause of blood supremacy.
It's not crazy? None of the Death EatersknewVoldemort was a half-blood, but I have to wonder how they didn't find out. He never gave his real name. The remaining twenty-eight pureblood families were named, and they must all have known that he was not one of them. The Death Eaters blindly followed someone who told them half-bloods were inferior, even a half-blood. How could someone put two and two together and say, "Um, wait a minute, something stinks?"
4. Risk your life for it
Being a Death Eater was by no means a secure job. They were the inner circle of one side in a war, which meant their lives were constantly in danger. they attacked the soldiersthe order of the Phoenixand, since Voldemort's cause was illegal, the entire Ministry of Magic. They risked his handlers, Azkaban, everything; there was nothing certain about being a Death Eater, which meant that each of them must have either really believed in this horrible thing, or were simply too afraid of Lord Voldemort.
I bet it was the latter for many of them.

3. Or often just throw it out completely
Sometimes it wasn't even about risking his life.
Sometimes it was pulled.
to see whenDraco Malfoy became a Death Eater. was assigned to do itmatar a Dumbledore. Voldemort had thought this impossible in the past, so a sixth year at Hogwarts certainly wouldn't do it, and they all knew it. But because Voldemort asked him to, he had to: either try to kill Dumbledore and die in the process, or be killed by Voldemort himself.
I didn't predict that I would start feeling sorry for Draco and then book six happened and I certainly did.
2. Don't use Voldemort's name.
This was a rule for everyone that Voldemort was trying to enforce, but among Death Eaters, those who would listen to him, he could actually do it.They were not allowed to say their names.(And the rest eventually risked Death Eaters showing up if they said so, thanks to the taboo I'd placed it in.)the deathly hallows.)
Voldemort thought that would be scary, and he was right. Most people called him You-Know-Who or He Who Must Not Be Named. The Death Eaters would refer to him as the Dark Lord. What... when you call someone dark, you surely know that the cause of him is quite unpleasant, but still.
It was considered extremely disrespectful to use his name, and Voldemort only tolerated the utmost respect from his Death Eaters.
1. Do what he asks
Above all, they were expected to do whatever Voldemort asked of them. It didn't matter what it was. They were asked to blackmail people, they were asked to torture them, and they were asked to kill them. The series is littered with people who have died at the hands of Death Eaters, and even people who have been tortured into insanity for information. Voldemort would only accept into his inner ranks people he was pretty sure he could fully manipulate and control, and if anyone ever broke ranks he would be tortured or killed, depending on the severity of his transgressions.
oops! No, thanks.
